We might think of someone when people ask whom we see as a leader. A leader can mean many different things. There is no one type of leader. Some leaders can have a positive or negative impact. But what kind of leaders do we see ourselves? I do not believe that leaders are born. I believe some leaders are born into situations and circumstances that push them to be a leader.

An example is being born a prince or princess. You are born to be a leader in that example. The circumstances push your limits and life teaches you different aspects that push you to be the kind of leader you are. There are no specific traits you have to have to be a leader. Our traits are what make us unique in our own ways. The kind of leader I imagine myself to be an empowering leader. I come from a background where women did not have careers as much as men. I come from a background where men were in control. I want to empower and show women that we women can be in power too. I do not want to come off strong, but I want to come off as an understanding leader. I want to be an example to other women. Just as I see my boss as a strong independent woman, I want to seem the same.

Leaderships Traits

A pro of trait-based theory is it is easy to understand. Another pro is you can self-assess. I personally find that very helpful. I wonder what kind of leader I am many times. Such a theory can help me figure it out. Even though I have done multiple assessments, I feel like this would still help. A con is it is subjective. People view leaders differently. What is really good or bad in a situation? As we discussed in class various leaders such as Oprah, Elon Musk, and Hitler.

4 Traits that are important to me:

Dependable: I am currently a follower in a way. I expect my managers to be dependable whenever and at all times. In terms of diversity, you want to make sure you can depend on your leader or have you be dependable no matter where you are from.

Tolerance of Stress: Stress can destroy some leaders. Some people cannot handle the stress and will let it out on their followers. That will only stress the team out.

Inspirational: Being inspired will only have the team happy to be there. Showing how much you care about the job and showing how much you care about the team is very important.

Judgment: This to me is very important. English is not my first language. Leaders before have judged me because of that. It is very important for a leader to not judge their team. In today’s world or even at any time, being judged makes a person feels excluded. It is very important to stay open-minded.

After learning from the chapters about leadership, I started thinking more about trait-based styles. The example brought up in class is the bus. Who do we want on our bus? I started to really think about certain questions. We cannot really decide who gets on our bus in most of situations. We can only act on how we act with the people in the bus. We cannot control the actions of others most of the time either. We discussed various different topics when it came to the bus. How do we act with people with different traits? Personally, I would like to have people with different traits. In my eyes, that is how teams bring out the best in each other. An example from me is when a new manager started at the job I used to work at. He came into an environment where everyone was in their own zone. Employees definitely had each different traits and behaviors of their own. When he started, he did not want to learn from me. Not quite sure still as to why. Maybe because I put in my two-week notice when he started. I genuinely cared about helping that place. When I noticed he did not want to learn, I gave up on the place even more. I caught an attitude with him. My point here is, it is very important to stay open-minded and open to learning from the people who are already on the bus. Their experiences and knowledge will help.

Contingency Theory

An example I have when it comes to contingency theory in situational leadership model is my old job as a front desk agent at L'Auberge Del Mar. I had been a front desk agent for about a year. I defintily had high competence on the job. However, my commitment towards the end of my time there was getting lower. I felt I should be promoted, but I did not get that. I also felt like I could offer more to the team. I was already contributing so much. For example I trained the new hires. I believe I was in the coaching stage. I was somewhat directive I would say. Not too much. I wouldn't say I like directing people, I feel many people do not like that. I did have supportive behavior, I believed in the team. I would say I was in the coaching stage S2, and in D4. My manager definitely showed more S3 stage. They were not directive at all, they supported me whenever I needed them to. For example, they did not feel like they had to be at the front desk or the office all the time. they could leave me to it, I would not need their help often. They had high competence, and I would say variable commitment.

Virtual experiences are something I have been seeing in the hospitality industry. I believe it especially boomed when COVID hit. Virtual experience on Airbnb for example. Through school, I have done an art class. I have also seen cooking classes, workout classes, etc. I believe it is a successful idea, but for how long? I believe at some point the virtual world will not be as strong as it is today. I mean the virtual world is not as strong as it was last year.

Blog #7 Contemporary Leadership

the theory I will be writing about is transformational leadership. A socialist started the leadership theory, his name was James V. The idea began in 1973. As defined by James V., leadership is meant to cause a change for the greater good. My last blog was about transformational leadership as well. I do not work at a place where my own managers really care much about my growth. They want to get the job done and that is about it. I guess that is what a sales job gets you. However, one person in the office, my leisure sales manager. Pamela Graves. She is an amazing person who genuinely cares about me. She cares about my growth in my professional and personal life. Whenever I am going through something, she would understand. She understands me at an amazing level. She says she has an open-door policy, and she really does. Some places or people will say that, but in reality, they do not really care about you. Currently, she is that person to me in a workplace where other mangers do not show care for me.

Final Blog

Doing the blogs was like writing for a journal. I talked about myself every week. That is not something we do on daily basis. We do not talk about our leadership for no reason. The blogs gave me a chance to do that. I learned a little bit more about my leadership style. This is something very important since I would like to get into management eventually. One thing I learned is that I do not mind being a follower. I actually think being a follower plays a huge role in learning. Especially if one day I will be the leader of that specific team. I would like to understand what the experience is for the people I would be leading. I also learned that I do not have a role model that I really look up to. the role model I used for one of the blogs had me really thinking. Is she a role model or someone I currently work well with? The answer to my question is that she is just someone I enjoy working with and whom I am gaining experience from. I can implement a lot of things from this class. It is easy to say until it comes time for it. Currently, I am training new hires at my job. I can tell you it takes some real leadership skills and time to train new hires in a department where I am the only coordinator. I am implementing the aspects I learned when it comes to leadership such as relationships with them. Do I want to be friendly or have a work strict environment? I am definitely more friendly. Again, it is easier said than done. I will see how I can use what I learned in this class in the real word.
